A village in Nakakubiki County in southern Niigata Prefecture. Population 5,497 (1995). It occupies the northeastern foot of Mt. Myoko and borders Nagano Prefecture on the east, across Mt. Madarao. The Seki River flows through the center of the village. The central settlement, Sekiyama, developed as a post town on the Hokkoku Kaido road leading to Shinano in the early modern period. Seki Onsen and Tsubame Onsen, the oldest hot springs in the Myoko Kogen hot springs area, are located on the middle slopes of Mt. Myoko, and the hot springs town was formed in the early Meiji period. Seki Onsen Ski Resort, opened in the early Taisho period, is one of the oldest ski resorts in Japan. After World War II, repatriates opened settlements in Gomankobayashi and Ooborahara on the eastern foot of Mt. 新潟県南部,中頸城(なかくびき)郡の村。人口5497(1995)。妙高山の北東麓を占め,東は斑尾(まだらお)山を境に長野県に接し,村の中央を関川が流れる。中心集落の関山は近世に信濃に通じる北国街道の宿場町として発達した。妙高山中腹には妙高高原温泉郷の中で最も古い関温泉や燕(つばめ)温泉があり,明治初期から温泉街が形成された。大正初期に開かれた関温泉スキー場は日本最古のスキー場の一つである。妙高山東麓の五万戸林,大洞原には第2次大戦後,引揚者の開拓村が開設されたが成功せず,現在は自衛隊の演習地,スキー場などになっている。
