An island in the New York City area of the United States. It is one of the five boroughs of New York City and was called Richmond until 1975. It has an area of 166 km2 and a population of 379,000 (1990). It is surrounded by New York Bay and Newark Bay, and borders New Jersey across a narrow channel. It is connected to Manhattan, about 8 km to the northeast, by ferry, and to the surrounding areas by four bridges, including the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, a huge suspension bridge that connects it to Brooklyn to the east.
