An American film made in 1977. Directed by George Lucas. It showed that the way to revive and utilize the fun and action of the heyday of Westerns was through "space opera," and it was this film that subsequently changed the mainstream of Hollywood action films from Westerns to science fiction. Gary Kurtz, who planned and produced the film with Lucas, said that this was because, as the "space age" arrived, the world of science fiction had an ideal villain, an alien, who could be set as the unquestionable "absolute evil" villain, like the Indians in old Westerns, and who could be killed as many times as he wanted without being criticized.

1977年製作のアメリカ映画。ジョージ･ルーカス監督作品。全盛期の西部劇のおもしろさ，その活劇性をよみがえらせて生かす道は〈スペース･オペラ〉(宇宙もの)にあるという手本を示し，以後，ハリウッドのアクション映画の主流を西部劇からSFに変えた1編。〈宇宙時代〉を迎えたという状況とともに，SFの世界には文句なしに〈絶対悪〉の敵役に設定できる，つまり，かつての西部劇におけるインディアンのように，映画の中でいくら殺しても批判されたりしない理想の悪役〈宇宙人〉がいたからだ，とこの映画をルーカスとともに企画･製作したゲーリー･カーツは語っている。
