An old city in the north of Toyama Prefecture. In 1951, it was separated from Takaoka City to the west and incorporated as a city. It borders Toyama City to the east. Facing Toyama Bay, it occupies the low marshes around Hojozu Lagoon, and the Manyo Line runs through it. The city center, located on the right bank of the Shogawa River estuary, flourished as a fishing port and rice shipping port in the early modern period, and is still one of the major coastal fishing bases along the Toyama Bay coast. Special steel and alloy steel factories were located here from the Taisho period to the early Showa period, but in 1964 it was designated a new industrial city, and the steel and lumber industries moved in. Toyama New Port opened in 1968, making use of Hojozu Lagoon and its surrounding area, and Fushiki Toyama Port, which is based here, was designated a specific important port in 1986, and heavy chemical industrialization was promoted. An aluminum smelter, a joint thermal power plant, and metal factories are located here, and the city has the third highest manufacturing shipment value in the prefecture (2001). In November 2005, the towns of Kosugi, Daimon, Oshima, and Shimomura in Imizu County were merged to form the city of Imizu. Area: 32.10 km2 . Population: 37,585 (2003). → Related Articles Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
