Whiteman, P.

...A work for piano and orchestra by Gershwin. Gershwin started out as a composer of popular songs, but in 1924 he was asked to compose a piece for the band of light music conductor Paul Whiteman (1890-1967). He composed using jazz idioms (especially blues) and completed the piece with the help of Grofé on the orchestration. The New York premiere on February 12, 1924 was a great success, and this work, which combined jazz and concertos, was performed in cities all over Europe and the United States, making the composer's name known around the world and sparking a trend in the music known as "symphonic jazz."
