Greater scaup (English spelling)

A bird of the Anatidae family (illustration). It breeds in the northernmost parts of Eurasia and North America, and spends the winter in temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. It migrates to Japan as a winter bird, and is often found on coasts all over the country, especially on the sea off shallow coasts. It can also be found at the mouths of rivers and large inland lakes and ponds. It feeds mainly on bottom-dwelling bivalves, but also eats crustaceans. It eats shells and shells, crushing them in its gizzard, so the gizzard of the Greater Scaup is significantly larger and stronger than that of other ducks. Total length is about 47 cm. Females are slightly smaller.

カモ目カモ科の鳥（イラスト）。ユーラシア大陸と北アメリカの最北部で繁殖し，北半球の温帯地方で越冬する。日本には冬鳥として渡来し，全国の海岸，とくに遠浅の海岸の海上に多く生息する。また河口や内陸の大きな湖沼でも少なからず見られる。餌は底生の二枚貝がおもだが，甲殻類なども食べる。貝類を殻ごと食べ，砂囊で砕くので，スズガモの砂囊は他のカモ類に比べて著しく大きくじょうぶである。全長約47cm。雌はやや小さい。
