A hard substance used to remove surface material by grinding, lapping, or polishing, or to make cutting wheels or disks. Grinding wheels are usually made by mixing abrasive grains with clay or feldspar and firing them; unfired wheels use synthetic resins, rubber, or shellac as binders. The abrasives are commonly silicon carbide and fused alumina, sometimes diamond or boron nitride (BN).
