Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research

Japanese: 科学研究費補助金 - かがくけんきゅうひほじょきん

Research grants provided by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. The purpose is to promote original and pioneering academic research in all fields, from humanities and social sciences to natural sciences. In addition to Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research and Grants for Promoting Publication of Research Results, there are other types of grants, such as the Special Researcher Encouragement Grant, which is given to JSPS Special Research Fellows to encourage young researchers. In 1999, the screening and grant work for some research categories, such as basic research, was transferred from the Ministry of Education (now the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) to the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, and efforts are being made to improve the evaluation and service systems. In 2000, the total amount was 141.9 billion yen, with 108,000 applications submitted and 43,000 accepted.

文部科学省と日本学術振興会が交付する研究助成費。人文・社会科学から自然科学まであらゆる分野での独創的，先駆的な学術研究の発展を目的とする。科学研究費，研究成果公開促進費のほか，若手研究者の奨励のため日本学術振興会特別研究員に交付される特別研究員奨励費などの種類がある。 1999年度から，基盤研究など一部研究種目の審査・交付業務を文部省 (現文部科学省) から日本学術振興会に移管し，評価およびサービス体制の向上をはかっている。 2000年度の総額は 1419億円，申請件数 10万 8000件，採択4万 3000件となっている。
