A city in the northern part of Nagano Prefecture, in the eastern part of the Nagano Basin. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. The city center developed as Taniguchi Village along the Ozasa Kaido road, which connects Gunma Prefecture with neighboring Nagano City to the west, and after the Meiji period it flourished as a silk-reeling industry. It is connected to Nagano and Nakano by the Nagano Electric Railway, and the Joshinetsu Expressway opened in 1993. Industrial and residential complexes have been developed, and the electrical equipment, metal, and general machinery industries have flourished. It serves as a tourist base for the surrounding areas of Yamada and Goshiki Onsen, as well as Sugadaira and other areas of Joshinetsu Kogen National Park. 長野県北部,長野盆地東部の市。1954年市制。中心市街は西隣の長野市と群馬県を結ぶ大笹街道沿いの谷口集落として発達,明治以後は製糸業で発展した。長野,中野の各市と長野電鉄で結ばれ,1993年上信越自動車道が開通した。工業団地,住宅団地の造成が進み,電気機器,金属,一般機器工業が発展している。周辺の山田・五色温泉,菅平など上信越高原国立公園への観光基地をなす。農村部はリンゴの多産地として有名。149.67km2。5万2168人(2010)。
