Prince Norihito

Prince Norihito
Born: February 27, 1733 (Kyoho 18) in Kyoto
[Died] July 6, 1794 (Kansei 6). Kan'innomiya, Kyoto. Father of Emperor Kokaku, Retired Emperor Tsuison. His name was Norihito, his childhood name was Hisanomiya, and his title was Jizaiōin. In 1742 (Kanpo 2), he became the adopted son of Emperor Mikado, and in 1743 he was proclaimed prince. The following year he was promoted to third rank and Dazai no sotsu. In 1748 (Kan'en 1), he was given second rank and a personal guard, and in 1780 (An'ei 9), he was promoted to first rank. In the same year, the sixth prince, Prince Kanehito, ascended to the throne and became Emperor Kokaku. Prince Kanehito tried to bestow the title of Retired Emperor on Prince Norihito, but Matsudaira Sadanobu, a senior councilor of the Edo Shogunate, refused and did not allow it (→ Retired Emperor Incident). In 1884, Emperor Meiji bestowed the title of Emperor Keikō on him. His tomb is located at Rozanji Mausoleum in Rozanji, Kitademachi, Teramachi-dori Hirokojiagaru, Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto City.

閑院宮。光格天皇の父,追尊太上天皇。名は典仁,幼称は寿宮 (ひさのみや) ,号は自在王院。寛保2 (1742) 年中御門天皇の猶子 (ゆうし) となり,同3年親王宣下,翌年三品,大宰帥 (だざいのそつ) となり,寛延1 (48) 年二品,随身兵仗を賜わり,安永9 (80) 年一品に進んだ。この年第6皇子兼仁 (ともひと) 親王が即位して光格天皇となり,典仁親王に太上天皇の尊号を贈ろうとしたが,江戸幕府の老中松平定信がこれを拒んで許さなかった (→尊号一件 ) 。 1884年明治天皇によって慶光 (きょうこう) 天皇の尊号が贈られた。陵墓は京都市上京区寺町通広小路上ル北出町廬山寺内の廬山寺陵。
