Godoy (English spelling) Godoy y Álvarez de Faria, Manuel de
Born: May 12, 1767 in Badajoz
[Died] October 4, 1851. Spanish politician in Paris. Born to a lower-class nobleman in Extrema, he joined the Royal Guard in 1784, was promoted to King Carlos IV, and later became a favorite of Queen Maria Luisa. He became Duke of Alcudia and was appointed Prime Minister in November 1892. In 1893, he allied with Great Britain and declared war on the French Republic, but after losing the Battle of Catalonia, he signed the Treaty of Basel in 1895 and was called Príncipe de la Paz (Prince of Peace). He was later driven from his position due to internal conflicts, but returned in 1801 and led the Spanish army to invade Portugal. He also allied with Napoleon I and fought against the British army, but was defeated at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. He was chased by the people during the Aranjuez Rebellion in 1808, and went into exile in Rome. He later moved to Paris and died there.
