A village in Kuma District, southeastern Kumamoto Prefecture. Population 1,559 (1995). The northern part is dominated by mountains that belong to the Kyushu Mountains, while the central and southern part is alluvial lowland along the Kuma River, forming a corner of the Hitoyoshi Basin. The main industry is agriculture, with rice, tobacco and tea cultivation, and livestock farming thriving. The Aso Shakado Hall, located at the site of Byodo-ji Temple in the Aso settlement, houses a Shaka Triad statue in the style of the Heian period.
