A translation of Cardinal. Also called "Suukikei." In the Catholic Church, a cardinal is the second highest ranking clergyman after the Pope. He is selected from among the bishops of the world and appointed by the Pope, and assists the Pope as his highest advisor. The Pope's hat and vestments are white, while those of bishops are red, but cardinals wear crimson hats and vestments. Cardinals are appointed to preside over each department of the Vatican Holy See and reside in the Vatican, but most remain in their respective dioceses and gather in Rome for the Congregation of Cardinals. The papacy is for life, but when the Pope dies, it is the cardinals who elect the new pope, and the new pope is chosen by mutual vote of the cardinals. As of October 2005, the Vatican has a total of 180 cardinals from 66 countries. Of these, the cardinal electors who participate in the conclave to select the new pope are under 80 years old, and consist of 111 cardinals from 51 countries. The Vatican places great importance on the Church in Japan, and the first cardinals appointed were Archbishop Doi Tatsuo of Tokyo, followed by Archbishop Taguchi Yoshigoro of Osaka and Archbishop Satowaki Asajiro of Nagasaki.
