...Around this time, batik was also made from silk instead of cotton. In the second half of the 19th century, the technique of wax-laying using a mold called tjap developed as an alternative to hand-painting, and mass production began with the use of chemical dyes. Batik was used for sarongs (waistcoats), dodos (formal wraps), and kain-kapalas (head hoods), and many were made as waist ornaments.
