...Military members of the National Guard also frequented these clubs and committees. Eventually, a republican central committee for all 20 arrondissements was formed, consisting of representatives from each arrondissement, and became the core of the popular movement throughout Paris under siege. At first, the central committee supported the National Defense Government in defense of the Republic, but when it realized that the National Defense Government had no intention of fighting to the end, it called for an uprising to overthrow the National Defense Government on January 6, 1871.
