French politician. Together with his son Louvois, he contributed greatly to strengthening the army of Louis XIV. Born a commoner, he became a royal official, and while serving as a court inspector, he investigated the Barefoot Rebellion (1639), a peasant uprising in Normandy, under Chancellor Séguier. In 1640, he became an inspector for the French army in Italy, and thereafter became involved in military administration. In 1643, he was appointed Secretary of State for the Army. When Louis XIV began his personal rule in 1661, he attempted to modernize the military, including restricting the sale of officers to the army, and prepared for a series of foreign wars.

フランスの政治家。息子のルーボアとともにルイ14世の陸軍の強化に功績をあげた。平民の出身で，国王役人となり，宮内審査官のとき大法官セギエのもとでノルマンディーの農民一揆〈裸足の乱〉(1639)の調査にあたる。1640年にイタリア駐留フランス軍付きの監察官となったのを契機として，以後軍事行政に従事することになり，43年陸軍担当の国務卿に任ぜられた。61年ルイ14世の親政が始まると，士官職における売官制の制限など軍隊組織の近代化をはかり，一連の対外戦争に備えた。
