1603‐85 French politician. Together with his son Louvois, he contributed greatly to strengthening the army of Louis XIV. Born a commoner, he became a royal official, and while serving as a court inspector, he investigated the Barefoot Rebellion (1639), a peasant uprising in Normandy, under Chancellor Séguier. In 1640, he became an inspector for the French army in Italy, and thereafter became involved in military administration. In 1643, he was appointed Secretary of State for the Army. When Louis XIV began his personal rule in 1661, he attempted to modernize the military, including restricting the sale of officers to the army, and prepared for a series of foreign wars.
