A former town area in the northeast of Ama City, in the west of Aichi Prefecture. It is located northwest of Nagoya City. It was incorporated as a town in 1932. In 2010, it merged with Shippo-cho and Miwa-cho to form Ama City. As a farming village near Nagoya City, it has been famous for rice and vegetable production to supply Nagoya since the Edo period, and was especially famous for its Horyo Daikon (Japanese radish) that was presented to the Tokugawa family. The production of brushes, a specialty of the area, began in the 1910s and at its peak accounted for 70% of the national production. However, since the 1970s, large quantities of Chinese products have been imported, and production has dropped significantly. In recent years, it has become a residential area. Jimokuji Temple, said to have been built at the end of the 6th century, is one of the four Owari Kannon temples, and its South Great Gate, Three-Storied Pagoda, and East Gate are designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan.
