Saruwaka Town

This is the former name of the area around present-day Asakusa 6-chome in the northeastern part of Taito Ward, Tokyo. During the Tenpo Reforms in 1842 (Tenpo 13), the playhouses in Sakai-cho, Fukiya-cho, and Kobiki-cho were moved to Asakusa Shoten-cho and renamed Saruwaka-cho. The area prospered as a theater town, with the three Edo theaters, Nakamura-za, Ichimura-za, and Morita-za. The place name was taken from the surname of Saruwaka Kanzaburo, who is said to be the ancestor of Edo actors and came to Edo at the beginning of the Kan'ei era (1624-1644). This theatrical tradition has been passed down to the present day in the sixth district and Hanayashiki of Asakusa Park.

東京都台東区(たいとうく)北東部、現在の浅草6丁目あたりの旧地名。天保(てんぽう)の改革にあたり、1842年（天保13）堺(さかい)町、葺屋(ふきや)町、木挽(こびき)町にあった芝居小屋を浅草聖天(しょうてん)町に移し、猿若町と改称。江戸三座といわれる中村座、市村座、森田座があり、芝居の町として繁栄した。地名は、寛永(かんえい)（1624～1644）の初め江戸に下ってきた江戸俳優の祖といわれる猿若勘三郎(かんざぶろう)の姓をとったことによる。この演劇の伝統は、浅草公園の六区(ろっく)、花屋敷に受け継がれて現在に及んでいる。
