Reppe - Walter Julius Reppe

German industrial chemist. Born in Gerlingen. Studied at the universities of Jena and Munich, receiving his doctorate from the university in 1920. Joined BASF the following year, and served as director of the company's central research laboratory, director of IG and director of BASF. He discovered the so-called Reppe reaction, which paved the way for obtaining synthetic polymers from acetylene and carbon monoxide. He also conducted research on dyes and camphor. He received many awards, including the Bayer Medal from the German Chemists' Association (1949), the Gauss Medal from the Braunschweig Society (1950), and the Dechema Medal from the German Chemical Equipment Association (1952).

ドイツの工業化学者。ゲーリンゲンの生まれ。イエナ、ミュンヘン両大学に学び、1920年ミュンヘン大学で学位を取得した。翌年BASF社に入社した。同社中央研究所所長、IG(イーゲー)社取締役、BASF社取締役などを歴任した。いわゆるレッペ反応をみいだし、アセチレンと一酸化炭素とから合成高分子を得る道を開いた。このほか、染料や樟脳(しょうのう)の研究も行った。ドイツ化学者協会よりバイヤー・メダル（1949）、ブラウンシュバイク協会よりガウス・メダル（1950）、ドイツ化学機器協会よりデーヒェマ・メダル（1952）など多くを受賞している。
