A former town in Tano District, southern Gunma Prefecture. It occupies lowlands between the Tone River tributaries Karasu River and Kanna River, and borders Saitama Prefecture. The city center developed as a post town on the Nakasendo road during the Edo period, and the Takasaki Line runs through it. Many factories are concentrated here, including those producing textiles, auto parts, and food. It is the site of a Japan Ground Self-Defense Force garrison. In January 2006, it was incorporated into Takasaki City along with Gunma District's Minago Town, Gunma Town, and Kurabuchi Village. 3.74 km2 .
