Newly Selected Records of Family Names - Shinsen Shojiroku

This is a genealogy book of ancient clans compiled in 815 (Kōnin 6). The compilation of this book began in 799 (Enryaku 18) when an order was issued to each province to compile a genuine genealogy register. It was completed in 814 by Prince Manta, Fujiwara no Sonohito, and Dotsugu, but an entry on Minamoto no Ason was added and other deficiencies were corrected before it was presented to the Imperial Court the following year. It consists of 30 volumes in total and one volume of a list of contents, but the version that has been passed down to us today is an abridged version, and some fragmented passages that give a glimpse into the original remain. The original lineages of 1,182 clans that lived in the provinces of Sakyo, Ukyo, Yamashiro, Yamato, Settsu, Kawachi, and Izumi are classified into three categories called the "three bodies" of Imperial, Divine, and Foreign clans, and the clans are arranged in order of their political influence at the time. Since it records ancient traditions of clans that were not included in classics such as the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, it is considered an important historical resource for the study of ancient history. Genealogies like this one were created based on political and social demands at the time of their compilation, so it is also a valuable document for learning about the historical aspects of the contemporary period.
