This disease is caused by infection with a plant pathogen called Gibberella fujikuroi (sometimes called Fusarium moniliforme ), and diseased rice plants become tall (elongated), their leaves turn a pale green, and in severe cases, they die. Eiichi Kurosawa, an engineer at the Agricultural Experiment Station in Taiwan at the time, proved that there was a substance in the metabolic products of this pathogen that caused rice to elongate, and in 1938, Teijiro Yabuta and Yusuke Sumiki of the Department of Agricultural Chemistry at the University of Tokyo isolated the active substance as a crystal and named it gibberellin. …
