A numerical value that indicates the ability of photographic materials such as photographic film and dry plates to sense light. It is also simply called sensitivity. It is not uniquely determined, but varies greatly depending on the type of photographic material, the color of the light source used, the method of development, etc., so normally a light source and development method suitable for each photographic material are specified, and the sensitivity is indicated for each. The method of indication also varies depending on the measurement method, and in Japan it is indicated as JIS, in Germany as DIN, in the UK as HD, in the USA as ASA, etc., but today it is standardized internationally as ISO sensitivity. Even in digital cameras, the imaging sensitivity is indicated as the equivalent of ISO sensitivity.
