The first electronic musical instrument equipped with the fundamental elements of an electronic organ was the Tellharmonium, produced in the United States in 1906. However, although it was an instrument, it was huge, about the size of a house and weighing 200 tons, and was not widely used. In the 1920s, practical electronic musical instruments such as the Theremin and Ondes Martenot appeared, and at the same time, the first electronic organs also began to appear. In 1929, American clock maker Laurence Hammond invented the Hammond organ, a representative early electronic organ, and it quickly became popular after it was released on the market in 1935. Many other electronic organs were developed in the 1930s and 1940s, and were used in churches as a substitute for pipe organs. After World War II, in the mid-1940s, electronic organs experienced a global boom, and competition in mass production and technology took place in various countries. The first electronic organ in Japan was produced in 1958 with technical cooperation from Nippon Gakki, NEC, and NHK, and around the same time, Victor announced the first domestically produced electronic organ. The following year, in 1959, Yamaha released the electronic organ (Electone), and electronic organs began to be used as entertainment instruments, breaking away from the image of being a substitute for church pipe organs. Currently, electronic organs are often classified according to the genre of music they are used for, their purpose, and form into church models as substitutes for pipe organs, theater models as high-end models suitable for use in theaters and concert halls, small spinet organs that are widely used in ordinary homes as easy-to-play instruments, and combo organs used for jazz combo ensembles. However, in recent years, with the dramatic improvement in the performance of electronic organs overall, the difference between theater models and spinet organs is becoming smaller than before. With the remarkable innovations in electronic technology, the electronic organ has undergone significant changes in terms of its sound generation method and operability. However, the basic specifications of two (sometimes three) manuals and one pedal board have remained relatively stable. This is an important element that gives this instrument, which can easily become difficult to grasp due to its wide range of functions, a distinctive character in terms of playing.

電子オルガンの原理的な要素が搭載された最初の電子楽器は、1906年にアメリカで制作されたテル・ハーモニアムである。ただしこれは楽器とはいっても、家一軒ほどの大きさで重さ200ｔという巨大なもので、一般化はされなかった。1920年代になってテレミン、オンド・マルトノなど実用化される電子楽器が現れたのと時期を同じくして、最初期の電子オルガンも出始めた。1929年にはアメリカの時計制作者、ローレンス・ハモンドによって初期の代表的な電子オルガンであるハモンド・オルガンが発明され、1935年に市場に出るや急速に普及した。このほかにも1930～40年代に多くの電子オルガンが開発され、教会でパイプ・オルガンの代用に使われるなどした。第2次世界大戦後の40年代半ば以降、電子オルガンは世界的なブームを迎え、各国で大量生産・技術面での競争が行われた。日本の電子オルガンは1958年に日本楽器、日本電気、NHKの技術協力によって試作され、これと前後してビクターから商品としては国産第1号の電子オルガンが発表された。翌1959年にヤマハの電子オルガン（エレクトーン）が発売され、教会のパイプ・オルガンの代用というイメージを抜け出したエンターテインメント用の楽器としての電子オルガンが本格的に打ち出されるようになった。現在のところ電子オルガンは、使用される音楽のジャンル、目的や形態によって、パイプ・オルガンの代用としてのチャーチ・モデル、劇場やコンサート・ホールでの使用に耐える高級機種であるシアター・モデル、一般家庭にイージー・プレイの楽器として広く普及している小型のスピネット・オルガン、ジャズのコンボ編成で合奏用に用いられるコンボ・オルガンなどに分類されることが多いが、電子オルガン全体の性能が飛躍的にアップした近年では、シアター・モデルとスピネット・オルガンの差が以前よりなくなってきている。電子技術の目覚ましい革新に合わせて、発音方式・操作性など、著しく変化を遂げた電子オルガンであるが、2段（時に3段）の手鍵盤に1段の足鍵盤という基本的な仕様が比較的安定して保たれていることは、機能が多岐にわたるため、ともすればとらえどころのなくなりがちなこの楽器を、奏法の面から特色づける重要な要素になっているともいえる。
