It is a unique singing style sung in the Alps and a musical form that includes it. It is characterized by a singing style that rapidly alternates between chest voice and falsetto. It is sung with meaningless syllables and is often used for parts of songs (especially the final refrain), but there are also songs in which the entire song is sung by yodeling alone. There are also singing styles in which a solo yodel stands out above a drone chorus, and yodeling duets and trios. Its origin is unclear, and there are various theories, such as it was a call for cattle herders to their animals, a way to communicate with friends, a talisman, or an imitation of the alpine horn. Similar singing styles are found all over the world, and are well known in African pygmy choruses and in Melanesia. In Japan, a similar singing style is partially used in the folk song "Hohai Bushi" from Tsugaru, Aomori Prefecture.
