A city in the province of Trapani in the western part of Sicily, southwest Italy. It is located about 40 km west-southwest of Palermo. The name comes from the Saracen fortress of Arcam in Monte Bonifato. The present town was founded by Frederick II in 1233. The 17th-century Assunta Church contains frescoes by G. Borremans and sculptures by A. Gazzini (1511). Population 42,000 (1991 estimate).
