Sinuiju

A city in the western part of North Pyongan Province, North Korea. It is the location of the province. It is located on the alluvial plain on the left bank of the Yalu River, 40 km upstream from the mouth of the Yalu River. It was the site of a railway bridge between Andong (now Dandong) in China, and the location of the province was moved from Uiju (1924), and it rapidly developed as a border city. The iron bridge between Sinuiju and Dandong was completed in 1911 and is 944 meters long. The center of the bridge was opened and closed by a rotating mechanism to allow ships to pass, but this was discontinued in 1934 due to bridge preservation reasons. Sinuiju is a representative light industrial base, with over 60 companies producing paper, textiles, and daily necessities. In the southern foothills of the city are the Rakugen Machinery Factory and the Spinning Machinery Factory, and in the southern outskirts of the city are a wool spinning factory and a staple fiber manufacturing factory that uses reeds as a raw material. After the Korean War, the city is also home to one of the country's leading enamel ironware factories, which was built with assistance from China.

北朝鮮、平安北道(へいあんほくどう／ピョンアンプクド)西部にある都市。道の所在地。鴨緑江(おうりょくこう)河口より40キロメートル上流の左岸の沖積地にある。中国の安東(あんとう／アントン)（現丹東(たんとう／タントン)）との間の鉄道架橋の地点となり、また道所在地を義州(ぎしゅう／ウィチュ)から移転（1924）して、国境都市として急速に発展した。1911年竣工(しゅんこう)した新義州―丹東間の鉄橋は全長944メートル。橋の中央は船舶通航のため回転開閉式によって開閉していたが、橋梁(きょうりょう)保存上34年より中止した。新義州は代表的な軽工業基地で、製紙、繊維、日用品など60余の企業体がある。市の南方山麓(さんろく)には楽元機械工場と紡績機械工場があり、市の南郊には毛紡績工場、アシを原料とするスフ生産工場がある。また朝鮮戦争後、中国の援助による国内屈指のほうろう質鉄器工場がある。
