Kyoto Blind and Blind Institution

Japanese: 京都盲啞院 - きょうともうあいん
Kyoto Blind and Blind Institution
This is the nickname of Japan's first school for the deaf and blind, founded by Furukawa Taishiro. The deaf and blind education that Furukawa attempted at Taiken Elementary School in the city began to develop around 1874 (Meiji 7), and the school opened in Higashinotoin, Oike, Nakagyo Ward on May 24, 1878. A movement within the city to open the school inspired Governor Makimura Masanao, and it was a prefectural school from the start. 3,000 citizens gathered in the rain for the opening ceremony, which saw 48 students enroll. The school moved to the current prefectural office the following year, and began vocational education in 1880. Rickshaws for commuting to the school and dormitories were also provided, and the school grew to 147 students by 1885. However, the Matsukata deflation caused financial difficulties.
