Women's school magazine

A magazine for women's enlightenment. From July 1885 (Meiji 18) to February 1904 (Meiji 37). A total of 548 issues. Published by Manshundo up to issue 10, then by Jogaku Zasshisha. It was founded by Yoshiharu Iwamoto as a spinoff from Jogaku Shinshi. The editors were Kenzo Kondo, Yoshiharu, and Aoyagi Takeshi. It was first published twice a month, then three times a month, then weekly, biweekly, and monthly. It aimed to enlighten and improve women's lives, and played an important role in the early women's liberation movement in Japan, including the establishment of the Christian-based Women's Temperance Union, the movement to abolish prostitution, and the monogamy petition movement. It sent Ishibashi Ningetsu, Kitamura Tokoku, and others to the critic stage, and its translation of Wakamatsu Shizuko's The Little Lord also drew attention. Other contributors to the work included Kimura Kumaji, Nakajima Shoen, Tanabe (Miyake) Kaho, Shimizu Shikin, Isogai Unpo, Hoshino Tenchi, and Shimazaki Toson. In 1892, it was divided into Volume A and Volume B based on the target readership, and Volume A was later renamed "Criticism." Derivative magazines such as "Girl Student" and "Girls' School Magazine Literature World" were published. A reprint edition is available (1966-67, Rinkawa Shoten).

女性啓蒙(けいもう)雑誌。1885年（明治18）7月～1904年（明治37）2月。計548冊。10号まで万春堂、以後女学雑誌社発行。巌本善治(いわもとよしはる)を中心に『女学新誌』から分かれて創刊された。編集人は近藤賢三から善治を経て青柳猛(あおやぎたけし)。発行回数は初め月2回、ついで3回、さらに週刊、隔週刊、月刊へ。女性の啓蒙・向上を目ざし、キリスト教を基盤とする婦人矯風会設立や廃娼(はいしょう)運動、一夫一婦制建白運動など、わが国初期婦人解放運動に重要な役割を果たした。石橋忍月(にんげつ)、北村透谷(とうこく)らを評壇に送ったほか、若松賤子(しずこ)の『小公子』翻訳も注目される。ほかに木村熊二(くまじ)、中島湘煙(しょうえん)、田辺（三宅(みやけ)）花圃(かほ)、清水紫琴(しきん)、磯貝雲峰(いそがいうんぽう)、星野天知(てんち)、島崎藤村(とうそん)らが執筆した。1892年、対象読者層によって甲の巻と乙の巻に分けられ、甲の巻はのち『評論』と改題。派生誌『女学生』『女学雑誌文学界』などが出された。復刻版（1966～67・臨川書店）がある。
