Born in 799, Kyoto [Died] Jōgan 7 (865)? The third son of Emperor Heizei. Also written as Takaoka. He became a monk and took the name Shinnyo. In 810, the retired Emperor Heizei raised an army to restore his throne (→Kusuko no Hen), but failed and had his head shaved, at which point he was deposed as the crown prince. He later became a Buddhist monk, lived at Toji Temple, became an ajari, and became a disciple of Kobo Daishi (Kukai). After Kobo Daishi's death, he traveled to China to seek the law, and in 861 he traveled to China, and in 862 he went to India, but his whereabouts became unknown. In 881, a monk studying in China reported that the prince had traveled to the Western Regions and died in Luoyue, a state believed to be the present-day Singapore.
