Golden Demon

Japanese:
Golden Demon

A full-length novel by Ozaki Koyo. It was serialized intermittently in the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper from January 1, 1897 (Meiji 30) to May 11, 1902. A part of the end of the Yomiuri serialization was republished in Shinshosetsu from January to March 1903 as Shinshoku Konjiki Yasha, but it was left unfinished. Published by Shunyodo from 1898 to 1903, 5 volumes, incomplete. Kan'ichi Hazama, a high school student, was in love with his fiancée Miya Shigisawa, but Miya was to marry the wealthy man Tadatsugu Toyama. Feeling betrayed, he disappears on the beach in Atami, leaving behind heartbreaking words to Miya: "When this month comes tonight next year, I will make the moon cloudy with my tears." Afterwards, Kan'ichi becomes a loan shark to get revenge, refusing to listen to the advice of his best friend, Arao. Miya, who regrets her marriage, begs Kan'ichi for forgiveness, but his request is not heard. However, just as Kan'ichi finally begins to open Miya's letters, the pregnancy is aborted. This masterpiece by Koyo was well received, and since its premiere at Ichimuraza in March 1898, it has been frequently performed in Shinpa theater, gaining overwhelming popularity, and has been hailed as a hit piece for Ii Yoho, Takada Minoru and others. It has also been made into many films.
