A small island in the northernmost part of Germany, belonging to Schleswig-Holstein. It is located at the northernmost part of the North Frisian Islands in the North Sea, and has the largest area of these (99 km2). It has a population of about 20,000. It is U-shaped and stretches about 37 km from north to south. Most of the island is made up of sand dunes. In 1927, the 11 km-long Hindenburg Dam was built to connect it to the mainland, and a railway line was laid on top of the dam.
