Schistosoma japonicum (Japanese blood fluke) - Schistosoma japonicum
A flatworm belonging to the trematode family. A parasitic worm that looks like a nematode. Approximately 2 cm long. In humans, it parasitizes the portal vein system and causes liver cirrhosis if it progresses. The intermediate host is the Japanese oyster, and cercariae released from it cause percutaneous infection in water. It is widely distributed in Southeast Asia, and in Japan, it was once endemic in the Kofu Basin, the Chikugo River basin, and the Katayama district of Hiroshima Prefecture (the disease caused by this trematode is also called Katayama disease). Anthelmintic drugs include organoantimony preparations and praziquantel.
