Yan Qianqiu

…The first scholar of the Qing Dynasty in China. His pen name was Baishi and his pen name was Qianqiu. He was from Taiyuan, Shanxi Province. He was famous for his interest in classics and history from a young age, but when he was 20 years old, he read the Ancient Texts Shangshu and became skeptical of its number of chapters. He eventually wrote the eight volumes of the Shangshu Commentaries on the Ancient Texts, and concluded that the 25 chapters of the Ancient Texts Shangshu and the biography of Kong Anguo were later forgeries. He was a pioneer in Qing Dynasty textual research in that he criticized the classics that had long been considered sacred. His other works include the Four Books Commentaries. [Sakaide Yoshinobu]…
