Blue Cat

Japanese:
Blue Cat

A collection of poems by Hagiwara Sakutaro. Published by Shinchosha in 1923 (Taisho 12). It contains 55 poems selected from those published between 1917 and 1922, as well as a poetic treatise, "The Rhythm of Free Verse." The sense of fatigue that appeared in the latter half of his first collection, "Howling at the Moon," becomes even stronger and pervades the first volume of "Blue Cat." To express this, he makes use of the staccatoness of colloquial speech to induce "a musical ecstasy created by the beauty of rhythm." "Play the organ, woman. Wear your black kimono. Sit in front of the organ. Your fingers will crawl over the organ. Lightly, gently, and quietly, like the sound of falling snow. Play the organ, woman." ("Black Organ"). In terms of artistic merit, it far surpasses "Howling at the Moon."
