King Gwanggaeto Stele (English: King Gwanggaeto Stele)

King Gwanggaeto Stele (English: King Gwanggaeto Stele)
This monument commemorating King Gwanggaeto is located in Donggang, Ji'an (now Ji'an County, Jilin Province, China) on the west bank of the Yalu River in Korea. It is also called the King Gwanggaeto Stele, and the king's correct name is Gwanggaeto Gyeongpyeon Gwanggaeto. It was rediscovered at the end of the Qing Dynasty, and since Su Guo Jingxin made a rubbing of it in 1884, it has been actively studied in Japan as well. The inscription, which is 6.2m high and 2m wide, is made up of over a thousand characters and contains the reasons for the monument's construction, the king's military exploits, and the king's orders and instructions regarding the tomb. In particular, the part about the king's military exploits, which describes his defeat of the allied forces of Wa (Japan) and Baekje in 391 and 399, is an important historical material for understanding ancient Japanese-Korean relations and for filling in gaps in the "Samguk Sagi" and "Nihon Shoki." It is also noteworthy that the oldest known example of the character "Mimana" can be found on the inscription.
