A private university with its headquarters in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. Founded in 1867 with a donation from the Quaker merchant Johns Hopkins, it began classes in 1876. Its first president, DC Gilman (1831-1908), made an effort to create a university centered on academic research in Europe, especially Germany, and established the first graduate-level courses in America centered on scientific research, shifting the emphasis of university education from undergraduate to graduate education and from general education to specialized education.

アメリカ合衆国メリーランド州ボルティモア市に本部がある私立大学。クエーカー教徒の商人ジョンズ･ホプキンズの寄付金をもとに1867年設立され，76年開講した。初代総長D.C.ギルマン(1831‐1908)は，ヨーロッパとくにドイツの学術研究を中心とする大学の創造に努力し，アメリカで初めて科学研究を中心とする大学院レベルの課程を置き，従来の大学教育の重点を，学部教育から大学院教育へ，一般教育から専門教育へと移行させた。
