...The prefectural capital city in the southwest of Gifu Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1889. Its population was 407,134 (1995). The central city is located in the northern part of the Nobi Plain, at the top of the alluvial fan of the Nagara River. During the Sengoku period, Saito Dosan built a castle on Kinkazan (Inabayama) and the castle town developed there. In 1567 (Eiroku 10), Oda Nobunaga defeated the Saito clan and entered the castle, changing the name of the town, which had been called Inokuchi, to Gifu, and bringing in artisans and merchants to make the castle town flourish. After the Oda clan was destroyed, the castle was moved to Kano, a post station on the Nakasendo road, and in the Edo period, Gifu made a new start as a town for townspeople in the Owari domain, and also served as a distribution center for goods shipped by boat on the Nagara River as Taniguchi settlement. ...
