[Noun] Under the Ritsuryo system, this was the chief of the Jingikan. Equivalent to Junior Fourth Rank Lower. 〘名〙令制で、神祇官の長官。従四位下相当。神祇の祭祀・卜兆のことや祝部・神戸の名籍の管理のことなどをつかさどる。はじめ中臣・巨勢氏などから任ぜられたが、永万元年（一一六五）花山天皇の後裔顕広王が任ぜられてのち、その子孫の白川家が世襲し伯家と呼ばれた。白川家は源氏賜姓後も神祇伯任官とともに王氏に復し王号を称した。かんづかさのかみ。神祇の伯(かみ)。※続日本紀‐和銅元年（708）三月丙午「以_二従四位上中臣朝臣意美麻呂_一為_二神祇伯_一」
