A caitya-gṛha is a shrine that has a stupa as its principal image, and the Buddhist cave temples of western India consisted of shrines and several monasteries where bhikkhus resided. In ancient times, a chaitya hall was a circular hall in which a stupa was placed, or a circular hall with a rectangular antechamber added.
