A river that flows along the slope of the Sea of Okhotsk in northeastern Hokkaido. It is a first-class river. It is 84 km long and has a drainage area of 1,240 square km. It originates on the eastern foot of Mt. Teshio in the Kitami Mountains, and tributaries such as the Sakuru River and the Oshiraneppu River join together to flow into the Sea of Okhotsk at Nagisabe Town in Monbetsu City. With several river terraces and a narrow valley bottom plain, it is a sandy river with little peat accumulation, so the plains of the basin have been used as good farmland. Takinoue in the middle reaches has been developed into large-scale rice paddies since the end of the Taisho era, but now it is being developed into a dairy farming area along with the lower reaches.
