Shokotsugawa River

A river that flows along the slope of the Sea of ​​Okhotsk in northeastern Hokkaido. It is a first-class river. It is 84 km long and has a drainage area of ​​1,240 square km. It originates on the eastern foot of Mt. Teshio in the Kitami Mountains, and tributaries such as the Sakuru River and the Oshiraneppu River join together to flow into the Sea of ​​Okhotsk at Nagisabe Town in Monbetsu City. With several river terraces and a narrow valley bottom plain, it is a sandy river with little peat accumulation, so the plains of the basin have been used as good farmland. Takinoue in the middle reaches has been developed into large-scale rice paddies since the end of the Taisho era, but now it is being developed into a dairy farming area along with the lower reaches.

北海道北東部、オホーツク海斜面を流れる川。一級河川。延長84キロメートル。流域面積1240平方キロメートル。北見山地の天塩岳(てしおだけ)東麓(とうろく)に源を発し、サクルー川、オシラネップ川などの支流をあわせて紋別市(もんべつし)渚滑市街でオホーツク海に注ぐ。数段の河岸段丘と狭い谷底平野を伴い、砂床河川で泥炭の堆積(たいせき)が少ないため、流域の平野部は良好な農地として利用されてきた。中流の滝上(たきのうえ)は大正末以来、大規模に開田されたが、現在は下流域とともに酪農地帯化が進んでいる。
