Esophageal voice

A method for people who have had a larynx removed to produce a voice. When a patient is forced to have the larynx removed due to laryngeal cancer or other reasons, they will lose the original method of vocalization, which is to use exhaled air to vibrate the vocal cords. In this case, there are two ways to regain voice: using an artificial larynx and using the esophagus to produce a voice. The latter is called esophageal vocalization, in which air is first swallowed into the esophagus, and then pushed out by abdominal pressure, etc., to open the mucous membrane at the top of the esophagus, causing this part to vibrate and produce a voice.

喉頭摘出手術を受けた無喉頭者が声を出す一方法。喉頭癌などで，やむをえず喉頭を摘出する手術を受けた場合，当然のことながら，本来の発声法である呼気を利用して声帯を振動させる方法が失われることとなる。この場合，声を取り戻す方法として，人工喉頭を利用する方法と食道を利用して声を出すやり方がある。後者を食道発声といい，空気をいったん食道に飲み込み，この空気を腹圧などで押し出すようにして，食道上部の粘膜を押し開く際に，この部分を振動させて発声するものである。
