A soft drink unique to Japan, it is a colorless carbonated drink flavored with sweeteners and citric acid and flavored with added flavorings. During the Meiji period, a carbonated drink called "champagne cider" that used artificial flavorings was sold and was well received, so it became the common name for similar products. The English word "cider" refers to apple juice or apple wine, and is different from Japanese cider. It is not much different from ramune, but ramune is a name that comes from lemonade, and cider can be considered a type of lemonade. Cider is said to have been first produced around 1887 (Meiji 20) by Akimoto Minosuke of Yokohama, who began selling it under the name Kinsen Cider while making ramune.
