Japaning

Japanese: japaning
Japaning

...It refers to a design drawn with lacquer, on which fine gold and silver powder is adhered and polished. Generally, this category includes gold and silver powder, colored powder (iroko) (pigments) sprinkled on, and combinations of mother-of-pearl and cut gold. The word "makie" is said to have first appeared in "The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter," and there are two theories about its origin: one is that it was made by "matsukinru" (a gold-and-silver comb) as recorded in the "National Treasure Book," and the other is that it comes from the technique of sprinkling gold and silver powder.
