Also known as Antigua Guatemala. A city in southern Guatemala. The capital of the Sacatepéquez department. It is located in the central highlands about 20 km west-southwest of the capital city of Guatemala City, at an altitude of about 1,500 m. During the Spanish colonial period, it was the capital of the Viceroyalty of Guatemala and an important city located halfway between Mexico City, where the Viceroyalty was located, and Lima. It was founded in 1527 as Santiago de los Caballeros in the current Ciudad Vieja, but was destroyed by the eruption of Agua Volcano, and a new capital was built in 1542 at its current location to the northeast. However, this city was also destroyed by an earthquake in 1773, and the capital was moved further northeast and called Guatemala City. This old capital became known as Antigua Capital (Spanish for "old capital") or simply Antigua. Present-day Antigua is mainly known for its colonial-era architecture, with ruins of old monasteries and churches scattered throughout the city, and many government buildings and private residences that have been reconstructed. The city, which has the appearance of a colonial-era history museum, was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1979. With a favorable climate and a scenic location surrounded by volcanoes, it has become one of Guatemala's leading tourist and health resorts, and is also developing as a residential suburb of the capital. 別称アンティグアグアテマラ Antigua Guatemala。グアテマラ南部の都市。サカテペケス県の県都。首都グアテマラ市の西南西約 20kmの中央高地にあり，標高約 1500m。スペイン植民地時代にはグアテマラ総督領の首都で，副王政庁の置かれたメキシコシティーとリマの中間に位置する重要な都市であった。 1527年現在のシウダードビエハの地にサンチアゴデロスカバイェロス Santiago de los Caballerosとして建設されたが，アグア火山の噴火により破壊されたため，1542年北東方の現在地に新たに首都として建設された。しかしこの町も 1773年地震で大破，首都はさらに北東に移されグアテマラ市と呼ばれ，この旧首都はアンティグアカピタル (スペイン語で「古い首都」の意) あるいは単にアンティグアとして知られるようになった。現在のアンティグアはおもに植民地時代の建築物の遺構で有名で，市内いたるところに古い修道院や聖堂などの跡があり，政庁舎や個人の邸宅など再建されたものも多い。植民地時代の歴史博物館の観を呈する市街は，1979年世界遺産の文化遺産に登録。気候にも恵まれ，火山に囲まれた風光明美な地にあることから，グアテマラ有数の観光・保養地となっており，また首都の郊外住宅地としても発展している。人口2万 715 (1990推計) 。
