The design is not only distinctive in that it depicts the six paths of reincarnation, but also in that it depicts a staircase of life at the top, which strangely matches the staircase of life that was widely printed in Europe from the 16th to 19th centuries, suggesting that the nature of Kumano faith was widespread in this area. …
