Raw opium is made by bruising immature poppy fruits and drying the juice that seeps out, and is also processed for smoking and medicinal purposes. It is a narcotic drug. Opium for smoking is in the form of an extract and is also called opium ointment. The main component of opium is an alkaloid, the most common being morphine, but there are also over 20 other types, including codeine, papaverine, and noscapine. It has pharmacological effects such as analgesic and sedative effects due to morphine and antispasmodic effects due to papaverine, and is used in preparations such as opium powder, opium powder, and opium tincture. It is taken orally as an emergency painkiller for severe pain from illness or injury, and is sometimes used as an adjunct to local anesthesia in minor surgery. ケシの未熟な果実に傷をつけ，しみ出た液汁を乾固したもの（生アヘン），およびこれを吸煙用，医薬用に加工したもの。麻薬。吸煙用アヘンはエキス状でアヘン煙膏ともいう。アヘンの主成分はアルカロイドで，モルヒネが最も多く，その他コデイン，パパベリン，ノスカピンなど二十数種に及ぶ。モルヒネによる鎮痛・鎮静作用，パパベリンによる鎮痙(ちんけい)作用等の薬理作用があり，アヘン末，アヘン散，アヘンチンキなどの製剤として用いられる。疾病，外傷などの激痛に応急の鎮痛剤として内服するほか，小手術の局所麻酔の補助として用いることがある。アヘン自身が麻薬で，またモルヒネ等の原料ともなるので，国際的にも取締りが厳重，国内的にもあへん法，麻薬取締法で規制されている。→アヘン中毒
