A garden and pond attached to Heijo Palace. In historical documents, the Shoku Nihongi (Chronicles of Japan Continued) mentions it only in 729 (Tenpyo 1), 730, 735, and 738, and it is also called Shorin Palace, Shorin, and Kita Shorin, where important annual court events and banquets were held, such as the Great Archery on January 17, the Kyokusui Banquet on March 3, and the Horseback Archery on May 5. The origins of such gardens and ponds lie in China, where they were often built to the north of palaces, such as the Hualin Garden at Luoyang Castle in the Northern Wei Dynasty and the Western Inner Garden at Chang'an Castle in the Tang Dynasty. In Japan, too, Asuka Kiyomihara Palace had a "Hakukinkoen" (White Brocade Rear Garden), and it is inferred from excavated wooden tablets that Fujiwara Palace also had a garden and pond to the north of the palace.
