A general term for waste materials such as the threads generated during reeling, the inner layer of the cocoon (pupal skin), and cocoons that have lost their threads during reeling. The main types are kibiso and bisu. Kibiso is made by collecting the threads that are removed with a thread broom to find the reeling opening, washing them in water, and drying them. Hisu is made by removing the pupa from a thin-skinned cocoon (pupal skin) and drying it. The relatively long kibiso are called noshiito, and all of these are used as raw materials for silk spinning. The production of secondary silk threads has been declining due to advances in silk-reeling technology, and the amount of secondary silk threads produced per bale of raw silk is about 10 kg, of which 56% is hisu and 33% is kibiso.
