One of the archangels in Judaism and Christianity. Also called the archangel. In Hebrew, it means "Who is like God?" According to legend, when the devil's chief Lucifer rebelled against God, the archangel Michael shouted this phrase to fight the devil and win the battle. He was regarded as the commander-in-chief of the heavenly army and the protector of the people of Israel. In Christianity, he is also revered as the leader of the angelic army that fights against the devil's forces and was made the commander-in-chief of the Christian army against pagans. In addition, because of the belief that he will appear in times of war or disaster to save Christians from crisis, stories of his appearance have been passed down in various places, and memorial churches and monasteries have been built. He is especially widely revered in Roman Catholicism and Greek Orthodox Church. In Islam, Michael is also revered as the archangel who protects the faith.

ユダヤ教，キリスト教における大天使の一人。天使長ともいう。ヘブライ語で「たれか神のごとき?」を意味するが，伝承によれば，悪魔の長ルキフェルが神に反逆したとき，天使の長ミカエルはこの語を叫んで悪魔と戦い，勝利を得たといわれる。天軍の総司令官とみなされ，イスラエルの民の守護者とされた。またキリスト教でも悪魔の軍勢と戦う天使軍の長とあがめられ，異教徒に対するキリスト教軍の総帥とされた。また戦争や災難のときに出現して，キリスト教徒の危機を救うとの信仰から，出現物語が各地に伝承され，記念の聖堂，修道院などが建てられている。特にローマ・カトリックとギリシア正教で広く崇敬されている。イスラム教でも信仰を擁護する大天使としてミカエルを尊崇する。
